How To Write Effective Marketing Copy

In trying to write this post, I have found myself staring into the white abyss that is a blank word document. Ideas flash before my eyes then disappear again, effortlessly, like that mate who never buys a round. Writing captivating copy can indeed be a daunting task, but you don’t need fancy copywriting courses to excel. By using the helpful tips below you’ll soon be channeling your inner Don Draper — just be sure to keep the infidelity to a minimum, yeah?

1. Know what you’re talking about

This might seem like an obvious observation, but trust me, the amount of people who just jump straight into copywriting in an attempt to just get words on a page is surprisingly high — and to be honest, I don’t blame you. However, taking the time to really understand the subject matter you’re writing about, be it a product, service, or a crypto investment tip that apparently has no downsides (“honestly please just invest bro please!!!”), you’ll find those once illusive words are now sitting pretty on the screen in front of you. You’re welcome.

2. Know who you’re talking to

This part of the process is all about adaptability. Like a copywriting chameleon. It’s vital that you understand your target audience, who you’re aiming the copy at, and who’s most likely to engage with it. Once you’ve got this part down, the way you present your copy will be able to fit accordingly.

3. Don’t be a robot

Nobody wants monotonous, monosyllabic dullness. Don’t be afraid to inject some colloquialism into your copy and let your personality come through. After all, anybody can put some coherent words on a page, but you need to stand out and allow your own personal writing style to flourish and captivate your audience.

4. Be honest

Remember what your mum used to say, honesty is the best policy. And we can vouch for mum’s advice — it is! No matter what you’re writing about, your readers are going to value honesty and integrity. Be sure to stay away from fabrication and tall tales and keep that credibility intact.

5. Show some passion

If you’re writing copy for marketing purposes, chances are you’re trying to influence your readers into buying or participating in something. And one thing always sells; passion. Unfortunately, apathy translates rather well across copy, so it’s important to display how much your chosen topic means to you, and how positively it’s going to impact the reader.

6. Get creative, break the rules

Copywriting is a great excuse to get those creative juices flowing — because nobody wants to read a huge chunk of bland text. Want to throw in some graphs? Great. Maybe a picture of your dog? Even better. Give the reader something a little different that’s going to keep them wanting to come back for more.

Being in the copywriting hotseat is a chance for you to shout from the rooftops about your brand — maybe take an umbrella though because this rain is torrential.
